Padel overgrips

The overgrip is the thin grip wound over the basic grip. It is the most frequently replaced component of a padel racket and rightly so: a fresh overgrip immediately improves the feel of the racket, absorbs sweat and prevents the racket from sliding during play. A worn overgrip is one of the most direct causes of unnecessary squeezing, which leads to overload in the forearm and elbow.

Types of overgrip

  • Sticky overgrip: has a slightly tacky surface that immediately gives a good grip feel. Popular with dry hands and cool weather conditions. Loses its sticky property when it becomes moist from sweat.
  • Absorbent overgrip: made from material that soaks up sweat. Less sticky than a sticky overgrip, but holds its grip longer with sweaty hands. The better choice for intensive players and warm conditions.
  • Dry overgrip: smooth in texture, creates little friction. Suitable for players who want a more neutral, direct connection with the racket. Requires a dry hand for optimal performance.

When to replace your overgrip

Do not wait until the overgrip is visibly damaged. Replace it as soon as it loses its grip, even if it still looks fine. An overgrip that has become smooth forces your hand to squeeze harder. That extra muscle tension in the forearm is directly linked to the development of padel elbow.

  • Playing 2-3 times per week: replace every 1-2 weeks.
  • Playing once per week: replace every 3-4 weeks.
  • Heavy sweating: replace more often, choose an absorbent type and use a wrist band.

Sweaty hands: choosing the right overgrip

With sweaty hands an absorbent overgrip is not a luxury but a necessity. A sticky overgrip that gets wet quickly loses its grip and then actually feels smooth. Choose a specifically absorbent overgrip and replace it more often than you think necessary. A damp overgrip in a closed bag degrades quickly: let your racket dry after playing before you put it away.

Overgrip and injury protection

The thickness of your overgrip affects the total thickness of your handle. An overgrip that is too thin on top of a too-thin basic grip gives a handle where you have to squeeze too hard. An overgrip that is too thick on top of an already thick basic grip gives a handle your hand cannot close properly around. In both cases the arm compensates for what the grip does not provide, and that is the direct trigger for epicondylitis and wrist complaints.

Frequently asked questions

How many overgrips can I stack?

Technically as many as you want, but every extra overgrip increases the handle thickness. Some players apply multiple layers to increase thickness without replacing the basic grip. The total thickness must be comfortable without having to squeeze.

Does the brand of overgrip matter?

Yes, material and quality differ per brand. We carry overgrips from Adidas, Babolat, Bullpadel, Wilson and other brands, each with a different balance of tackiness, absorption and texture. Not sure which suits your hand? Ask for advice.

How do I apply an overgrip?

Start at the bottom of the handle, wind with light tension diagonally upward and overlap each wrap slightly. Ensure even tension without creases. Secure the overgrip at the top with the included adhesive strip.
