What a padel shirt needs to do

A good padel shirt meets a few concrete demands. It breathes and wicks moisture outward so you do not play an entire match in wet fabric. It stretches with you in the shoulders and sides, because every bandeja, smash and crosscourt shot demands a wide range of motion. The fabric is light but durable enough to survive a few hundred washes. And the seams are flat-finished, because padel can run six sets and chafing seams under the arms start to bite after an hour.

Shorts: length and fit

Padel shorts typically end just above the knee. A bit shorter than a typical football short, a bit longer than a running short. Too short and the short rides up on a low volley. Too long and the fabric gets in the way of quick short steps in the service position. Good padel shorts have two pockets, a separate ball pocket (essential for serving), and an elastic waistband that does not slip during a rally.

Material: technical over cotton

• Polyester with moisture-wicking: the standard for padel. Moisture is moved to the outside of the fabric where it evaporates faster. Result: less clammy fabric, less chafing.
• Stretch (elastane or lycra): 5-10 percent stretch gives freedom of movement on smashes and lobs without losing fit.
• UV protection: for outdoor padel in summer. Some brands offer UPF 30 or higher, especially in the Adidas and NOX padel lines.
• Anti-bacterial: treatments that prevent odour build-up. Padel means intensive sweating - a shirt that does not smell after a match is no luxury.

Care

Always wash technical padel clothing at 30 degrees or lower. Higher and the moisture-wicking layer loses function. No fabric softener, because it leaves a film that blocks moisture transport. And dry inside out to keep the colour vivid. With this little effort the clothing lasts twice as long.
